Can the lives and deaths of 3 young environmentalists teach us to save one of our last wild rivers?
lla, Ella, and Michael knew protecting New Mexico’s last wild river benefits us all and lived lives dedicated to protecting our natural resources. Heart of the Gila follows in their footsteps and continues that commitment.
The purpose of the project is to create a documentary film that inspires a diverse audience to take action to protect the Gila River, in Southwest New Mexico. We will tell the story of the river through the eyes of three teens who gave their lives in service to protecting the wild. Ella Kirk, Michael Mahl, and Ella Myers pursued a scientific understanding of the river and were vocal advocates for protecting the Gila for future generations. Heart of the Gila will help build a groundswell of support to meet the ultimate goal of long-term protection using legislative approaches to protect the Gila River forever.
Heart of the Gila is a collaborative project with David Garcia, Albuquerque filmmaker, Patrice Mutchnick, parent of Ella Jaz and director of the Ella Jaz Watershed Project, and Todd Schulke, co-founder of the Center for Biological Diversity. Heart of the Gila will be the first feature length film to showcase the outstanding wilderness qualities of the Gila, conveying the grandeur of the Gila’s steep canyons and the beauty of its lush valleys. A combination of aerial drones, specially designed gimbal-equipped watercraft, and water-protected 6K RAW film cameras will document the long, winding path this desert river takes as it nourishes and nurtures the landscape of the southwest.
The goal for the Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico is to raise awareness and funds for this important project which they are currently filming.
