Regional flows for 12/27/2025!

by Rock Snot

Here is a late flows update for 12/27/2025! It looks a slight downward trend might be reversing with Cerro at 430 cfs today and rising. Down on the OV and Racecourse, flows are still looking good with TJB reporting 630 cfs; an estimated flow for the Box would be 608 cfs. Flows on the Chama are still low, with the reported level below El Vado at 99 cfs, and the reported below Abiquiu Dam around 74 cfs. Up in Colorado, flows reports are coming in low, with the Upper Colorado (Gore Canyon, Pumphouse) coming in at 402 cfs. Downstream on the Shoshone Section (where a New Year’s Day float has been often held in the past), the reported flow is 747 cfs. On the Arkansas River, a number of the gauges aren’t reporting but the Wellsville gauge for Royal Gorge is reporting 308 cfs. No idea about ice bridges/dams on any of these sections. And out west in Utah, the Cataract Canyon of the Colorado River has a reported flow of 4,260 cfs from the gauge at Gypsum Canyon near Hite, UT.

WARNING: when weather is cold enough to allow ice to form in rivers, these rivers can develop ice "bridges" or places where a layer of ice (sometimes thick) is formed across the river. Just because there is a flow doesn't mean there aren't significant (and dangerous) ice obstructions in the river.

NOTE: gauge readings can be distorted when ice is forming in rivers.
